Tunisian crochet produces generally creates a dense durable and slightly elastic fabric which is very suitable for cushions, pot holders, blankets, slippers and hats etc.
It is worked using longer hooks than standard and without turns
so that the front of your work is always facing.
There is a basic stitch called the simple stitch in addition
to which there is Tunisian Stocking Stitch, Tunisian purl
stitch and Tunisian Mesh stitch. The different stitches
are formed by inserting the hook into different parts of
the stitch which consequently creates a different yarn
formation.
The first row of Tunisian, or as it is sometimes called, Afghan crochet is made by working a foundation row along a starting chain this is followed by a return row. Following rows are made by working a pick up row followed by a return row.
The Tunisian/Afghan Crochet Hook- this is longer than the standard crochet hook and is rather like a knitting needle with a hook at one end. The overall length of the hook determines the maximum width of the fabric. |
