Knitting a V Neck Line
The neckband on a V-shaped neckline can be mitered, with decreases each side of a central stitch, or overlapped at the centre front. The band is usually knitted in rib but garter stitch or stocking stitch can also be used.
Preparing a V-Neck
1,A classic V neckline usually starts at the same position as the armhole shaping. With an even number of stitches divide the centre and knit each side separately. With an odd number of stitches either decrease the centre stitch before dividing or leave it on a safety pin then when it is time to work the edging you will continue this centre stitch, usually as a knit stitch on the right side, decreasing one stitch either side of this centre stitch to create a mitered corner at the base of the V.
2,Evenly space the number of decrease rows to the shoulder, these can either be made at the neck edge or 3-4 stitches in from the edge to give a fully fashioned neck.
3,Join shoulder seams then pick up and knit the desired number of stitches around the neck opening. Mark the centre st. at the base of the V with a coloured piece of yarn
Working Your V Neckband
1,In your desired edging, i.e. rib, st.st. or garter stitch, work round the neckband decreasing one side of the marked centre stitch. If you have an odd number of stitches this will be the st. placed on the safety pin, slip this back onto your needles and work your decreases either side as follows, on right side, work to within 2 sts. of centre st. skpo*, K centre st. K2 tog. work to end.
2,On wrong side work to within 2 sts. of centre st.work 1 skpo* p centre st. k2 tog. work to end.
3,With an even number of stitches work the decreases in a similar fashion but working the centre 2 sts. as k2 from right side and P2 from wrong side.
* skpo- slip one k1, pass slip stitch over
Cross- Over neckband
1,Join right shoulder seam. With right side facing, and beginning at left shoulder, pick up the required number of stitches down left front neck to centre point.Work in rib for required depth, cast off in rib.
2,With right side facing and beginning at centre front pick up required number of stitches up right front and across back neck.Work in rib for required depth, cast off in rib.
3,Join left shoulder and neckband seam, then overlap edges of neck band and sew down row ends along edges where stitches were picked up.
