Knitted Shoulder Pads

How to Make Your Own Knitted Shoulder Pads.
Garments which have a more tailored style often need shoulder pads to achieve the effect the designer is look for.Pads knitted in the same yarn as the garment do not show through and ensure the right thickness is obtained.

Lightweight Shoulder Pads.
1,Using the same yarn as the garment is knitted in and the needles recommended on the ball band,cast on 3 sts.Work in garter st.(every row knit) increasing 1 st. by working into the front and back of the st. at the beginning and end of every alternate row.

2,When there are approximately 17 sts. on the needle- the size depends on the thickness of the yarn,work about 5 rows straight.Now start to decrease by knitting 2 sts. together at the beginning and end of the next row.

3,Continue decreasing at each end of every alternate row until there are 7 sts. remaining, Cast off these 7 sts.

4,Fold the shoulder pad along the row where you started decreasing,thread a large blunt-eyed needle with the same yarn and slipstich the edges in place.Make another shoulder pad in the same way.

5,Insert the pads into the garment with the folded edges along the armhole seam
and attach with a few sts. at the corners.

Medium Weight Shoulder Pads.
1,Using the same yarn as the garment is knitted in and the needles recommended on the ball band,cast on 3 sts.Work in garter st.(every row knit) increasing 1 st. by working into the front and back of the st. at the beginning and end of every alternate row.

2, When there are 23 sts. on the needle start the shaping over the 3 central sts. by slipping the next st.knitting the following 2 together and then passing the slipped st.over. Repeat this process every following 4th. row, at the same time continue to inc. at each edge of every alternate row.
When there are 29 sts. cast off.

3,Make 2 more pieces in the same way.Join 2 of the pads by oversewing or working double crochet through both the thicknesses of the shaped edges.Repeat for the other 2 pieces. If you wish the pads to be thicker insert a piece of foam cut to the same shape before closing the cast off edge.

4,Insert the pads into the garment with the  cast off edge along the armhole seam and attach with a few sts. at the corners.

Heavyweight Shoulder Pads.
1,Using the same yarn as the garment is knitted in and the needles recommended on the ball band,cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 (RS) K2, all into next st. work[K1,P1,K1]K2. 7sts.
Row 2 and every alternate row,P to end
Row 3 K3,all into next st. work[K1,P1,K1,P1,K1]K3. 11sts.
Row 5 K2 *all into next st.work [K1,P1,K1]k2,rep from* twice more 17sts.

2,Using an extra ball of yarn as required work as follows-
Row 7 Using yarn single K3, join in extra ball of yarn and using double yarn P11,drop extra yarn an using 1 strand k3.
Row 8 Using yarn single P3 pick up from extra ball and using yarn double P11, drop extra yarn then with one strand P3.
repeat rows 7 and 8 for 9cm.

3,Cast off 5 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows then using yarn double continue in garter sts. ( every row k) for a further 4cm.cast off leaving a 25cm length of yarn.

4, Fold the garter st. extension to the wrong side along the cast off row.Using a large blunt-eyed needle and the length of yarn slipstitch the cast off edge down.
Make another shoulder pad the same way.

5,Insert the pads into the garment with the  cast off edge along the armhole seam and attach with a few sts. at the corners.
