Cowl Sweater Pattern in 6 Sizes

Cowl Sweater Pattern- whilst we hope that this free knitting pattern works out well for you The Knitting Wool Store disclaims responsibility.

Soft and cosy sweater with cowl necked, worked throughout in single rib

Size: 34",36", 38", 40", 42", 44" 91.5,96.5,101.5,106.5,112,117 cm.

Materials: Alize Alpaca Royal 100g balls 5,5,6,6,6,7, (no.56 illustrated.)


Needles: 1 pair straight 4.5mm and 5mm
1 circular 4.5mm and 5mm for cowl neck.

Instructions for Cowl Sweater Pattern

Back:
Using 3.5mm straight needles cast on 80,84,90,96,100,106.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 3", 7.5cm

Change to 5mm straight needles and work inK1 P1 rib. Keeping rib correct increase 10 stitches evenly across piece. You will now have 90,94,100,106,110,116 stitches. Work until piece measures
14",15",15",16",16"17",  35.5,38,38,40.5,40.5,43 cm

Shape Arm Holes:
At the beginning of the next 2 rows cast off 5 sts.
At the beginning of the next 2 rows cast off 3 sts.
Then decrease 1st. each end of every right side row 3,4,5,5,5,6times

You  now have 68,70,74,80,84,88 stitches remaining.

Work in pattern until armhole measures 7.5",8",8.5",8.75",9", 9" 19,20,21.5,22,23,23 cm

Shape shoulders:
At the beginning of next 2 rows cast off 6,7,7,8,8,9 sts.
At the beginning of next 2 rows cast off 6,6,7,8,8,8 sts
At the beginning of next 2 rows cast off 6,6,7,7,8,8 sts

Place remaining stitches on holder,32,32,32,34,36,38 .

Front:
Cast on and work rib as for back until arm hole measures 6.25',6.75',7.25',7,75',8,8', 16,17,18.5,20,20.5,20.5 cm

You  now have 68,70,74,80,84,88 stitches remaining.

Work across 26,27,29,32,32,34 stitches, place centre 16,16,16,16,20,20 stitches on a holder. You will now have 26,27,29,32,32,34 stitches left on both sides, work each side separately.

At neck edge cast off 3 sts. 1 times. 2 sts,1,1,1,2,1,2 times. The decrease 1 st. at neck edge  3,3,3,2,3,2 times. At the same time when arm hole measures same as back to shoulders -

Shape Shoulders

At each armhole edge cast off 6,7,7,8,8,9 sts. 1 times. Then 6,6,7,8,8,8 1 times then cast off remaining 6,6,7,7,8,8 sts.

Sleeves:

Using size 3.5 mm needles cast on 46,46,50,50,50,54 sts.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 2.5" 6.5cm

Change to no. 5 mm needles, work in K1 P1 rib.  Inc. 1 st. at each end of every 4 rows 8,12,14,16,18,17 times

Then increase 1 st. each end of needle every 6 rows to 78,82,88,90,92,96 stitches.

If necessary continue in pattern until sleeve measures 16",16.5",16.75",17",17.5",17.75" 40.5,42,42.5,43,44.5, 45 cm

Shape Sleeve  Cap:
At the beginning of next 2 rows cast off 5 sts.

At the beginning of following 2 rows cast off 3 sts.

Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every right side row 3,4,5,5,5,6 times

You will have 56,58,62,64,66,68 stitches remaining

For size 44' 112,cm only dec 1 st. each end 0f needle every 4 rows 4 times

For all sizes: dec 1 sts. each end of needle ever 2 rows 9,8,9,9,10,1 times

Then cast off 2 sts at beg. of next next 4,6,6,6,6,8 rows

Then cast off 2 sts at beg. of next 5,5,5,6,6,7 rows

12,12,12,12,12,14 sts. remain cont. until piece measures 3.5",3.75", 4", 4.5",4.75", 5" 9,9.5,10,11.5,12,12.5 cm. from last cast off stitches.

Join Saddles: Sew front edges of sleeve caps to front armholes.Sew front edges of saddle shoulder straps to CO edges of front shoulders, easing in any fullness. Sew back edges of sleeve caps to back armholes Sew back  edges of saddle shoulder straps to CO edges of back shoulders, easing in any fullness.

Cowl Neck:  Using 3.5mm circular needles pick up 11,11,12,12,13,13 sts. from left front, place sts. on front holder on needle, pick up 11,11,12,12,13,13, sts.up right front and then slip stitches from back holder onto needle.

Work K1 P1 rib for 2", 5cm, change to 5mm circular needles and keeping rib pattern correct increase evenly on next row to 134,140,146,152,158,164 sts. Now work in pattern until cowl collar measures 11" 28cm, or desired length. Cast Off.

Finishing: Join side and under arm seams, darn in ends.
