Making covered crochet buttons is a lovely way to add a touch of individuality to your crocheted cardigan or jacket. You can work them in the same yarn or a contrasting one. You can crochet a cover for either a large bead or an existing rounded button.
The same method can also be used for covering beads for necklaces or making Christmas Tree baubles.
1, Make 2 chain, work 6DC into first ch to make a small ring.Do not slip stitch to join the ring but carry on working in a spiral. Work 2 DC into every alt. st. until the crochet piece is large enough to accommodate the bead or button.
2,Hold bead inside the crochet piece and continue to work in spirals until approx. one third of the bead is visible. Dec. by working 2 sts. tog. every alternate st.When the bead is nearly covered work 2sts. into every st. until it is no longer visible.
3, Cut the yarn leaving a 30cm. tail and use this to secure the work with a blunt ended needle and a few tight stitches. Then with the same tail sew the covered crochet button firmly in place. The Knitting Wool Store
