Amigurumis are a fun, and I must say, very addictive form of crochet. This form of crocheting, and sometimes knitting too, originated in Japan where things in miniature seem to be revered. The order is actually a composite of 2 Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.
They are generally made using double knitting yarn with small hooks or needles in relation to the thickness of the yarn, thus creating a close, compact and sturdy fabric.
