How to Knit Bobbles

Knitted Bobbles.
Bobbles are most often found as part of a textured pattern, such as a traditional Aran.They can be various sizes, worked against a stocking stitch or reverse stocking stitch background, in rows, or alternating.

Small Bobbles
1,
Work until position of bobble is reached. All into next stitch on left hand needle - knit into front, back, front and then back of stitch again before letting the stitch drop off the needle.

2,
Use left hand needle to pass second, then third and finally fourth stitch on right-hand needle over the first stitch and off the needle.Work to the end of the row placing your bobbles as required.On the next row work the stitched in the usual way.

Loop Bobbles.

1,Work until position of bobble is reached.* K4B( insert right-hand needle into stitch 4 rows below the next stitch on left-hand needle and knit in the usual way drawing loop through),yfon ( bring yarn forward between needles and back over needle to make one stitch.) Repeat from * twice then 4KB.

2,Slip 7 stitches thus made back onto left-hand needle. Knit the 7 stitches together with next stitch on left-hand needle. On the next row work the stitches in the usual way.

Large Bobbles

1,Work until position of bobble is reached.( In this example the bobbles have been worked against a reverse st.st. background but a st.st background can also be used.) All into next stitch on left hand needle knit into front, back, front and then back of stitch again before letting the stitch drop off the needle.

2,* Turn work and purl across the 4 sts. just made.Turn work and knit across these 4 sts. Repeat from * once more. 2,Use left hand needle to pass second, then third and finally fourth stitch on right-hand needle over the first stitch and off the needle.Work to the end of the row placing your bobbles as required.On the next row work the stitched in the usual way.

Crochet Bobbles

1,
Work until position of bobble is reached.( In this example the bobbles have been worked against a reverse st.st. background but a st.st background can also be used.)Take yarn to back, on a knit row leave yarn at back, and using a crochet hook pick up the bar between last 2 sts. on right-hand needle. Insert hook knitwise through next stitch on left-had needle, transfer yarn to left hand and wind yarn round the hook loosely.

Draw loop through stitch.* yarn round hook loosely, insert hook through stitch on left-hand needle, yarn round hook and draw loop through.Repeat from * twice more then yarn round hook and draw through all 8 loops on hook.Let stitch drop off left-hand needle and place loop from hook onto right-hand needle. Work to position of next bobble. On the return row work stitches as normal.
